I use a small crockpot. This takes longer, but I can put it on a light-timer to turn it on when I am not yet home.

We have rice cooker and love it. I wanted one for Christmas and my husband thought it would go by the wayside just like the ice tea maker and bread machine. We use it almost weekly for super easy meals. My husband has blogged about some of the meals on dadsroadhouse dot com.

Hey Everyone

It sure seems like the rice cookers are very popular. Andy has certainly sparked my interest with them.

Thanks for the tip on the "best" rice cooker - I'll go check it out. I also lived in Japan for a time and came back with the same appreciation for well-cooked rice. And, like you, I have memories of mother boiling the rice and draining in the colander. Yech! No wonder I was never that crazy about rice as a kid! I've owned a variety of rice cookers over the past 20-odd years and just love them! In addition to cooking rice in mine, I also use it to cook Kashi 7-grain pilaf and it does a beautiful job on that.

We love our rice cooker. Spouse even makes meals like risotto, and desserts like rice pudding in it! Our copy of "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook" is near-tattered from use :-).

We bought a rice cooker a year ago and it is our most often used appliance.
First it is the easiest to use. Push the button and wait for the beep.
But most important it ALWAYS makes perfect rice. And it doesn't matter whether you are using longer grain Jasmine (our favorite) or the shorter slightly sticky Japanese rice.
One piece of advice: We have learned from our Japanese friends how important it is to rinse the rice before cooking. It makes a difference.
